- Naval platforms are complex systems with stringent reliability and performance requirements, which often undergo extensive upgrade and re-fit throughout life. Hence, a wide range of, often complex, technical activities are conducted throughout platform life to maintain a high level of design assurance. This paper explores the use of real-time simulation as a tool in support of these activities. With a high level of realtime interactivity this simulation technique can provide an analogue to the physical system for activities such as: development and testing of operating procedures; operator training; fault analysis; and research and development. As an enabler for a hardware-in-the-loop system, real-time simulation can provide cost effective and flexible options for test and evaluation of naval platforms.
